A man identified as Vincenzo Licciardi, second from right, listed as one of the country's 30 most-wanted mafia fugitives, is escorted by police after his arrest, in Naples, southern Italy, Thursday Feb. 7, 2008. Italian police consider Vincenzo 'O Chiatto' (Fatso) Licciardi, 42, to be one of the heads of the Camorra crime syndicate operating in Naples and the surrounding Campania region. He was arrested without incident in the city of Cuma, near Naples, a police spokeswoman said Thursday

U.S., Sicilian Police Join Forces in Mafia Crackdown

By Steve Scherer

Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. and Italian authorities teamed up in the biggest mafia crackdown in 20 years in an attempt to cut off renewed ties between New York's Gambino family and Sicilian mobsters, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Italian prosecutors said.

The FBI, state and local law enforcement forces made more than 60 arrests overnight, an FBI official said, while Italian police made about 30, in an operation called ``Old Bridge,'' Italy's top mafia prosecutor Pietro Grasso said in a telephone interview. The last joint mob roundup on this scale was in 1988, when the FBI and Palermo authorities broke up a heroin trafficking ring known as ``Iron Tower.''

``Whenever the relationship between the American and Sicilian mafias is interrupted, it's always resuscitated,'' Palermo prosecutor Domenico Gozzo, who was involved in the probe, said in a telephone interview. ``Many of these mobsters have family on both sides of the Atlantic.''

The relationship between the two mafias had broken down in the early 1980s due to a mob war in Sicily. Now the two factions are focused above all on laundering dirty money and cocaine trafficking, according to Italian investigators and court documents. Bernardo Provenzano, the boss of bosses captured after 43 years on the run in 2006, had authorized the new contacts, according to letters that police seized, Grasso said.

`Teflon Don'

Today's arrests include the street boss, underboss and consigliere of the Gambino crime family, the three highest-ranking members not already in prison, an FBI official said. Charges include racketeering, murder, extortion, gambling and labor violations. In Italy the accusations include murder, money laundering and participating in organized crime.

New York's Gambino family was formerly headed by the ``Teflon Don'' John Gotti. The founder of the New York family, Carlo Gambino, was born in Sicily.

Sicilian Cosa Nostra boss Salvatore ``Toto'' Riina had banished mobsters tied to murdered bosses Salvatore Inzerillo and Stefano Bontate to the U.S. in 1983 after a two-year mob war left about 1,000 people dead. He spared some of the wise guys tied to Inzerillo and Bontate provided they never return to Sicily to seek revenge, according to today's Italian arrest warrants.

Riina's pact held until about 2000, when Sicilian and U.S. organized crime figures sought to resume business contacts. In 2003 and 2004, Palermo police tapped phones used by suspected mobsters visiting from New York, and followed them in their meetings in Palermo. They also tracked Sicilian mobsters to New York, where the FBI conducted surveillance, court documents show.
