A tactic used by photographers is to place equipment inside a diaper bag. Some even have the corner of a diaper hanging out. If a thief opens the case, the first thing they see is a "used" diaper with a bit of peanut butter dabbed onto it.
In the View, I use a combination of Pelican cases (warranted against bear attacks, shark bites and 6 year olds) and Pac-Safes.
It's impossible to protect against a determined professional thief but most are in a hurry and will not bother with something that takes too long.
