That's the fan you're hearing. If you watch your coolant
thermometer, you'll see that it kicks in somewhere just above 190
degrees (as I recall). Once you get back in the 180's, it will
disengage.
You can hear the turbo, but it's a lot more subtle. It's a very high
frequency distinctive whistle. Most of the time I can't hear it with
all the road noise, but if you're driving with the windows open near
some surface that noise can bounce off like storefronts, or rock face
on mountain switchbacks, you'll hear it.

> I have a 2007 V23H (5cyl) with about 5K miles. Today (Friday) on my
trip from Santa Barbara to San Diego I had a couple of major climbs
getting into the LA Valley. In both cases about 2/3 of the way into
the climb in 4th gear running between 2700-3000 rpm and about 55 MPH
on the speedo I heard a noise I've never experienced before. It was
sort of a high pitched "whine" that started just like as if an
electric cooling fan was kicking in, however frequency was much
higher then any electric cooling fan I had ever heard. If I had to
guess, based on the pitch of the "whine", I'd speculate that the
transmission was slipping, that's what it sounded like, however the
pull never changed, the engine RPMs remained relatively constant and
I do not believe I lost any speed as a result. Once peaking the
pull, accelerator setting reduced I shifted into "D" and the "whine"
dissipated within less then 1 minute. This experience was almost
exactly repeated on the 2nd long hard pull. I

> I stopped for lunch at Bluff Park in Long Beach and while my wife
was preparing lunch I scoured the manuals looking for info on how to
check the transmission fluid and what fluid to be added (MB spec's).
I could not find anything in the Sprinter manuals regarding how to
check the fluid levels and what fluids were approved.
