Lee & Stan,
OK, I'll just be the devil. I've only had one electrical problem,
shorted wire, found by accident after a long search. I've found the
View to be perhaps the most reliable RV I've ever heard of. Well, just
say very reliable. Original converter, original batteries. The
batteries all still test very good and we use them dry camping. When
and if the original converter fails I'll spend $ to replace it with a 3
stage, batteries probably Trojans when they fail and I expect the
chassis battery to last a long time with it always connected to a
battery minder when not being driven.
If you get hit with all the batteries and converter failures in one
month you might think otherwise. In deep south weather the AC is
barely adequate unless you find a shade to park in but I don't want a
bigger one, just more effecient.
It is possible that many battery failures happen because rigs sit on a
dealers lot not connected and discharge or are left discharged for long
periods. I've had a battery failure in three new vehicles within a
year, all good quality batteries but not in the View. Those three
failures were in vehicles driven daily with no other electrical
issues. Starting (chassis) batteries in theory should be more prone to
early demise because of more plates stacked closer together to gain
higher CCA. Heck I even had a "disabling" battery failure on a new
Harley Davidson Low Rider. That sucker shorted internally and "black
beauty" died at 4:00 AM on a very remote backroad in rural Georgia.
I just don't place battery failure in the realm of design flaws by the
RV maker (unless they put in really cheapo trash). It does seem there
have been many (more than two or three) converter failures but I'm
unsure of all the circumstances. The nature of that beast is that it
will most likely fail when plugged in at load.
After saying all this I'm getting nervous(not really) about taking
another trip; I might loose batteries and converter but stuff happens.
Actually I've been pleased with the OEM batteries in the View.
Normally I just expect battery problems in a new vehicle for the
reasons mentioned. The starting battery for a diesel needs real guts.
On farm equipment and my diesel PU I install a second starting battery
to provide more power in cold weather.
