The ScanGaugeII does not read cylinder head temperature.
If it is very cold outside, I think you can tell that the engine temps are low by simply looking at the coolant temperature gauge. That's not the definitive test though, because if the thermostat can cut the water flow off to the radiator enough, the coolant temperature will be in the normal range.
Even if the water temperature shows normal, the oil temperature will surely be too low to effectively drive off moisture and unburnt fuel.
You could do a test (I don't think I will). Go someplace where it is really cold, say zero F and let your engine idle for a few hours. Now, at the end of the test, have someone stand outside near the exhaust pipe. Put the Sprinter in Drive, stand on the brakes and floor the accelerator for a couple of seconds and see if a lot of smoke comes out. If you see smoke, you can bet your bippy that some of the "slobber" that got into the exhaust has run past the piston rings, carboned the grooves a bit and then run down into your crankcase and diluted the oil. Probably not enough to hurt anything for this test run, but I would bet that it didn't do the engine any good.
Anyway, what the heck do I know? :-)
